Miriam Elizabeth Stoner Mendenhall passed away peacefully on Friday, August 18, 2017. She was born June 9, 1927, to Edward Norris and Florence Burkett Stoner in Ladoga, Indiana. She was the fifth of seven children who remained close for all their lives even though geographical distances kept them apart.
Miriam graduated from Tipton High School, Tipton, IN, in 1945 and then graduated from Indiana University as a Mortar Board scholar in 1949. While studying at Indiana, she met Murray J. Mendenhall, Jr. of Fort Wayne. They married on June 10, 1950, and remained a loving couple until his death on February 7, 2014. Although she knew very little about the sport of basketball before meeting and marrying Murray, she became an avid fan of high school and college basketball, continuing to participate in, and winning in 2015, the Stoner family March Madness NCAA basketball pool. Upon graduation from IU, Miriam taught Home Economics at Edinburg High School, Indianapolis Manual High School and at both Jefferson and Lane Junior Highs in Fort Wayne until retiring in 1977. She loved sewing, knitting and other forms of needlework, making many handmade items for friends and family and her beloved PEO Chapter CP. She was also a member of Delta Delta Delta at IU and enjoyed being a part of the alumnae chapter in Fort Wayne. Her bright smile and loving nature will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by three children, son Murray Mendenhall, III, and wife, Cindy, of Fort Wayne, daughter Susan Nickels and husband, Ken, of Iowa City, Iowa, and son Thomas Mendenhall and wife, Beth, of Indianapolis. She is also survived by brothers James Marvin Stoner (Florida) and Samuel David Stoner (Craftsbury Common, Vermont), seven grandchildren Erika Frantz (Ryan), Ashlea Stone (John), Katherine Kirchner (Scott), Benjamin Nickels (Stacey), Ellyn Mendenhall, Carly Mendenhall, Jayne Mendenhall, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Murray, and brothers Norris Eugene Stoner, Richard Burkett Stoner, Allan Wilbur Stoner and sister Rachel Esther Stoner. The family would like to give our sincere appreciation to the many staff members of the Coventry Meadows Healthcare campus and to the staff of Visiting Nurses of Fort Wayne. Our sweet mother enjoyed her time living in the Garden Homes and Assisted Living parts of the Coventry Meadows campus and was lovingly cared for while in assisted living, rehabilitation and in long-term nursing care. We are forever grateful for their service. Funeral service is 11:00 am, Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Monday, August 28, 2017 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations for memorials may be made to Waynedale United Methodist Church, Coventry Meadows of Fort Wayne, the Aboite Branch of the Allen County Public Library or Visiting Nurses of Fort Wayne.
