Martha Berghoff Ryan 78 passed away at home surrounded by her loving family. Marty was born in Fort Wayne on November 7, 1938. Marty was the daughter of the late Norbert G. and Betty Noll Berghoff. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in South Bend, IN and attended Barat College in Lake Forest, IL. Marty had an unwavering faith in God and devout love for her family and friends. She created a beautiful home that was often the place where all were welcome for joyful gatherings. Marty was a steadfast partner to her husband of 55+ years, Rich Ryan. Sharing the role of Grandparent to 17 grandchildren was one of her greatest joys. When not in the bleachers watching grandkids play or perform, she was often on the links with Rich. She even managed to card her 2nd hole-in-one at the age of 75 to nearly rival her husband's hole-in-one record. Marty was a compassionate leader and community volunteer. A lifetime member of the Junior League, she volunteered countless hours at the Bargain Box, knitted blankets for the Women's Care Centers and The Christ Child Society and teaching children with hearing difficulties. Marty believed strongly in the power of education and created a scholarship fund to help make college more affordable for students and their families. Marty gracefully managed the last difficult phase of her life with courage, humor and grace. She will be missed and remembered daily. Her beautiful legacy will be a reminder to be loving, generous of spirit and to treat others with compassion and respect. Marty was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Survived by her husband Rich of 55 plus years, five daughters, one son, and seventeen grandchildren: Marilyn (Mike), Ally and Austin Stonebraker/Stanford; Kathleen (Bob), Lauren, Mitchell and Grant Purlee; Patty (Jim), Dylan, Mackenzie, Brett and Jack Taylor; Laura Ann Ryan; Colleen (Tim), Sarah, Erin and Luke Carstens; John (Carol) Megan, Patrick, Emily, Logan and Corey Ryan. Marty was also preceded in death by her sister June E. Miller, brother William G. Berghoff, sister-in-law Betty Ann Lawler, granddaughter Abigail Ryan, and son-in-law Dan Stonebraker. We especially want to thank Visiting Nurse and all of the members of Susan's Home Sweet Home Hospice care team for their loving care of Marty during her very difficult times. Mass of Christian Burial is 11:00 am, Monday, January 9, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2213 Brooklyn Avenue, Fort Wayne, IN 46802, with calling 1 hour prior. Calling also from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm with a Rosary service at 6:00 pm at D.O. McComb & Sons, Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Rd., Fort Wayne, IN 46814.
