Lavonne M. "Bonnie" DeRose, 92, left her family for her place in heaven on Tuesday, May 1, 2018. Born in Fort Wayne she was the daughter of the late Charles and Tillie Bump. She retired from Supermarket Services Corp., where she met lifetime friends, and previously volunteered her time at Lutheran Hospital, where she rocked and cuddled newborn babies. On January 23, 1944, she married her childhood sweetheart, Patrick DeRose, with whom she would enjoy 62 years of marriage before his death in 2006. A strong, independent wife and mother, Bonnie held it all together at home while Pat served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. She endured the hardship many women experienced during that time, when Pat's B-24 Liberator was shot down, and he was held prisoner of war. The uncertainty of knowing his fate while she struggled with the responsibilities of young motherhood would create an inseparable bond between them for the rest of their days. Bonnie would later state that the joy of learning of his liberation by allied forces was one of the highlights of her life, and she and Pat would go on to nurture their large, close-knit family with the knowledge that life is both precious and temporary. They taught their children the importance of the words "I love you," and that a warm hug really can solve almost anything, especially if it also came with a heaping plate of Bonnie's spaghetti and meatballs. Bonnie was proud of her family, and in recent years, looked forward to kissing "that handsome Italian boy" (Pat) again, holding their infant daughter, born into heaven in 1968, and reuniting with her beloved cat, Sam. Bonnie will be missed everyday by her children, Patty (LeRoy) Dilley, James (Donna) DeRose, Patrick (Shirley) DeRose Jr., Marilyn (John) Gatton, Carolyn (Steve) Minich, Diana (Ron) Dantzer, Virginia (Delbert) Kirby, John (Trina) DeRose, Teresa (Lynn) Rosswurm, Helen (Mark) Carrico, Jeanette Newman, and Mary (Brian) Sievers; 29 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren; special nieces and nephew, Bonnie Mosier, Susie Terpos, Jo Smith, and John Gonser; her "baby boy," Dr. Jeff Walker; extended family, friends, and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Patrick DeRose, daughter Karen DeRose, great-granddaughter Brooke Dilley, 2 brothers, and 4 sisters. Service is 1:30 pm, May 7, 2018 at - D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Avenue with calling an hour prior. Calling at the funeral home Sunday, May 6, 2018, 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Memorials may be made to the Heart to Heart Hospice. "Nana, we will love and miss you always, but we are happy that you are at peace with Papa again."
