L. Thomas Byers, 86, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017. He was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on January 16, 1931, the son of the late Howard and Hannah Byers. After graduating South Side High School in 1949, Tom joined the Air Force and served during the Korean War. Upon his return Tom began his career, serving as the Division Vice President with Mutual Security Life for 7 years, he then went on to serve as Regional Vice President for Century Company for some time before becoming the Field Vice President of American United Life Insurance, until his retirement in 1996.Tom was the Education Chairman for CLU Chapter and Life Underwriters Association, and the Zone Vice President for Indiana Association of Life Underwriters. Among Tom's many accomplishments, he also taught CLU classes for 15 years, LUTC classes for 5 years as well as a Personal Salesmanship Class at Indiana University. Aside from work, Tom truly loved to fish, and spent many afternoons peacefully floating along in his bass boat. Later he resided on Crooked Lake, reliving his childhood memories. Even as recently as 2015 the entire family would gather on the lake to share those memories. As Tom slowed down over the last few years he continued to gather with friends, he never lost his sense of humor, nor his welcoming smile. Tom was an infamous story teller, and even in the last few weeks could deliver a well-timed punch line. He loved teaching adult Sunday school classes at St. Joseph United Methodist Church where he could dig a litter deeper in to his faith, and openly share his beliefs among friends. He will be forever remembered as a loving and devoted father and grandfather. His warmth, compassion and kindness will live in the heart of all his friends and family. He is survived by his children; Gary (Joyce O'Connell) Byers, and Julie Tritch; grandchildren, Marc (Lisa) Byers, Ryan (Mandy) Tritch, Daniel (Kimberly) Tritch, and Sarah (Tim) Hornig; great-grandchildren, Kylie and Owen Hornig, Madelyn and Maxton Byers, and Ellie Tritch; and sister, Beverly (Bill) Stein.
