Joseph "Bill" William Hammen, 89, passed away Friday, March 31, 2017. He was born on December 17, 1927 in Dayton, OH, the son of the late Joseph and Alma Hammen. Bill was active in the Boys Scouts and advanced to an Eagle Scout. During High School he boxed in the Fort Wayne Golden Gloves until 1945. After graduating Central Catholic High School, Bill served in the US Navy Reserve on the USN TADC WIM, the USS EGERIA and USS LSM 118 as a Seaman First Class. Bill married Jeanne (Freistroffer) Hammen on February 26, 1949 and they went on to enjoy 68 years of marriage together. Bill began working at Pure Sealed Dairy where he went on to become the Plant Superintendent. He then went on to work for Allen Dairy where he retired as Route Salesman in December of 1989. In his spare time he was an avid gardener, and enjoyed playing golf. Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Hammen; siblings, George "Lee" Hammen, Juanita M. Fabian, and Geraldine R. Herber; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Hammen in July of 2016; and brother, Eugene E. Hammen. Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10:00AM Saturday, April 8, 2017 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church 2120 S. Harrison St. Ft. Wayne, IN 46802, with calling 1 hour prior. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017 at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park 1140 Lake Ave. Ft. Wayne, IN 46805 from 4-8pm. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Soup Kitchen.
