John F. Gaughan, 89, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2017, at his home in Fort Wayne, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Evanston, IL, he graduated from St. Bede Academy in Peru, IL. John enlisted in the Marine Corp during WWII, directly out of high school, and served for 5 1/2 years -- 16 months in North China and 9 months on Guam. After serving our country, John graduated from Quincy College in Illinois in 1953, and in 1957 he earned a Master of Education in Educational Administration from Xavier University. John served for 57 years in Catholic secondary education in Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana. He began his teaching and coaching career at Ottawa Marquette High School in Illinois, which was followed by a stint at Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati. John taught and coached for 8 years at Bishop Luers in Ft. Wayne, and for 11 years at St. Bede Academy. The Gaughan family returned to Indiana where he served as Principal at Bishop Dwenger High School for 15 years. He then spent 16 years as an administrator in the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese Catholic Schools Office. John was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash in 1994, and inducted into the Indiana High School Hall of Fame in 2010. He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Surviving are his loving wife of 65 years, Patricia Marie (Murphy) Gaughan of Fort Wayne, IN; children, John F. (Rebecca) Gaughan II, Barney (Eileen) Gaughan, Michael (Mary Ann) Gaughan, Patrick (Christy) Gaughan, Mary Pat (Kyle) Eppele, Thomas (Sandra) Gaughan, Rev. Joseph Gaughan, Martin (Megan) Gaughan, Kelly Ann (William) Hokanson; 28 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his father, Michael Gaughan, mother, Katherine Gaughan, brother Martin Gaughan, sisters Rosemary Miller and Kathleen Pecorari, son Daniel Anthony Gaughan, and grandson Nicholas Haley Gaughan. The Mass of Christian Burial is Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at 10:30 AM, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, with calling one hour prior. The Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend, will preside. Calling will also be held Monday, March 20, 2017, from 4 - 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 4:30 p.m. at D. O. McComb & Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Road. Burial in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne, IN.
