Joanne B. Lantz, PhD, 85, passed away Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Heritage Pointe of Fort Wayne surrounded by her family. Born in Defiance, OH, Joanne attended and graduated from Central High School, Fort Wayne IN. She continued her education at the University of Indianapolis, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education, followed by a Masters in Counseling from Indiana University, and a Doctorate from Michigan State University. Joanne was an avid promoter of higher education, serving as Chancellor of IPFW from 1988 to 1994. She was often seen around campus following her retirement as she remained a strong supporter of the institution through the years. To further demonstrate her dedication to education, Joanne established the Joanne B. and Wayne E. Lantz Scholarship Fund.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the International Board of Trustees Educational Foundation, and the American Association of University Women. Joanne served on the board of directors for the following: Foellinger Foundation, Fort Wayne National Bank, Parkview Hospital, and Vera Bradley. She was a recipient of the distinguished Sagamore of the Wabash Award in 1994. Surviving are her loving husband of 62 years, Wayne E. Lantz of Fort Wayne, her brother William Baldwin of Fort Wayne, and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Joanne was preceded in death by sister Alvera Shaw of Bloomington, IN and parents Hiram and Ethel J. Baldwin of Defiance, OH. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017 at Leo United Methodist Church, 13527 Leo Rd, Leo, IN from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with the funeral service, officiated by Reverend Ann Lantz, immediately following at 1:00 p.m. Joanne will be buried in Leo Memorial Cemetery, Leo, IN. Memorials may be made to the Joanne B. and Wayne E. Lantz Endowment Fund at IPFW.
