James W. Martin, 88, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Parkview Hospital Randallia. Jim was born on January 24, 1930 in Fort Wayne to the late Oscar and Vera Martin. He was a graduate of South Side High School and an Army veteran in the Korean War. He married Corrine Stotlar on June 7, 1952 at South Side Church of the Nazarene in Fort Wayne. Jim deeply loved his family but loved his Savior, Jesus Christ, even more. He enjoyed reading and studying the Bible and had an in-depth knowledge and understanding of scripture. He attended the former Fort Wayne Bible College and helped lead Bible study for inmates at Pendleton Correctional Facility. Jim never knew a stranger, making friends everywhere he went, from Newport News, Virginia to Maui, Hawaii to the local McDonald's where he met with a group of friends every morning for coffee. He was a 70-year member of a group of seven men who vowed in high school to never get married and called themselves "The Bachelors". That vow did not last long, however, and the men and their wives still meet monthly for lunch. Jim thoroughly enjoyed spending time at Lake James beginning at the age of three when his father built a cottage there, continuing through forty-one years of owning his own lake home on Eagle Island. He had a very strong work ethic and was employed at Dana Corporation for 20 years. He was a successful businessman, starting Martin Spouting, Inc. in 1964 which he operated for many years. Jim is survived by Corrine Martin, his beloved wife of 66 years; children, Paul (Nancy) Martin of Fort Wayne, Steve (Mary) Martin of Fort Wayne, Deb (Rod) Gerig of Harlan, Indiana, and former daughter-in-law Pam Martin of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Chris (Candice) Martin, Ashley Martin, Brittni Martin, Megan (Brad) Foutz, and Amanda Gerig; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Abigail, and Alexander Martin; brothers, Richard Martin and Philip Martin; and sisters, Arlene Kelley and Joan Truex. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Mary Martin, brother, Robert Martin and sisters, Beverly Graham and Alice Martin. Calling hours are 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at Brookside Church, 6102 Evard Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana (Doors 1 or 2). A private family burial will be held Wednesday morning, August 22, 2018, at Leo Memorial Park. Funeral service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the church with Pastor Kent Keener officiating. The family sincerely thanks all of the Hospice Team in the Supportive Care Unit at Parkview. Your tender, compassionate care of both Jim and our entire family helped make this very difficult time easier to walk through. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be given to Latin American Missions Board, PO Box 15663, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46885. Specify: "Dr. Jane Weaver, San Lorenzo Clinic, Ecuador" on your gift. To sign the online guest book, please visit
