James A. Smith, Jr., 91, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2017. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, James was the son of the late James and Agnes Smith Sr. James was a WWII Marine veteran. He was a lineman and installer for GTE/Verizon for 40 years before his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, American Legion, Post 499 COF, IBEW #723. James enjoyed fishing, hunting, being at the lake, and being a jack of all trades. He was a loving husband, dad, and grandpa to his family. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Charlotte Smith of Fort Wayne; children, James (Alfredo Gugliotta) Smith IV of Berlin, Germany, Gregory (Kathryn) Smith of Columbia City, Karl (JoAnna) Smith of Churubusco, Elaine (Dr. Dan) Nicholson of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Kristina (Matt) Pettigrew, April (Jason) Risser, Jeffrey Lowe; one great-granddaughter, Alexis; sister, Marie Beucler of Columbia City, sister-in-laws, Mary Catherine Smith, and Jane Smith. James was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard, Walter, and Donald Smith. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:00 am, Friday, July 28, 2017 at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception with calling one hour prior. Calling at D.O. McComb & Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 East Dupont Road Thursday, July 27, 2017, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm & 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm with a rosary service at 3:30 pm. Burial in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Indian Mission or St. Labre Indian Mission.
