Geraldine M. "Gerry" (Foy) Benson, 87, of Fort Wayne, died Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Parkview Regional Medical Center. She was born in Kendallville, Indiana on January 20, 1930 to the late Dr. Hayward W. Foy and Blanche E. (Reif) Foy. She graduated from North Side High School in 1947, graduated from Northwestern University in 1951 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and received a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from the University of St. Francis in 1968. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority during College and was active in the Fort Wayne Zeta Alumni group for 50 years, serving as an officer many times. Gerry was employed as an elementary teacher for the Chicago Public Schools for two years; then moved home to Fort Wayne where she served as a teacher of homebound elementary students for 26 years. She also was employed as a District Manager for World Book Encyclopedia for 10 years. Gerry enjoyed teaching Sunday School, acting as a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, and volunteering at Historic Fort Wayne in their living history program. Her other interests included; camping, skiing, attending Civil War conferences with her Civil War buff husband, traveling to Civil War battlefields and other American history sites and American Presidents' homes and libraries. Surviving are her loving and supportive husband of 52 years, Daryl M. Benson; daughters, Adele (Marvin) Richardson of Fort Wayne; Kristin (Dave Yaggy) Eby of Fort Wayne, step-children, Kim Benson of Fort Wayne, Kurt (Lisa) Benson of Huntertown, and Kary (Kerry) Benson of LaOtto; grandchildren, Beau Benson, Brock Benson, Brittany Benson, Alex Palmer, Anna Marie Bade, Luke Eby, Alyssa Eby, Emma Eby, Amelia Yaggy; great-grandchildren, Addilyn Benson-Wallace, Isabella Benson, Oliver Benson, Eli Bade, Olivia Bade, Aiden Bade; brother, Jim Foy of Anthem, AZ; sisters, Helen Ransburg of Fort Wayne, Kathy Burris of LaSalle, IL; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gerry was preceded in death by her brothers William Foy, and Thomas Foy. Service is 11 am, Wednesday, January 3, 2017 at D.O. McComb and Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 E. Dupont Rd, with calling one hour prior. Calling at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 2, 2017 from 2 pm to 4 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm. Burial in Cedar Creek Cemetery, Garrett, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo.
