George H. Abels, age 91, passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at his residence with his family by his side. He was born on September 24, 1926 in Evanston, Illinois. Mr. Abels served his country honorably with the United States Navy during World War II. In 1950, he graduated from The Ohio State University. The greatest day of his life was when he met Ruth Werling at Bledsoe's Beach Lake James Dance. On October 22, 1950, he married Ruth Werling. George worked for WOWO as a sale promotion manager. In 1959, he started Abels Advertising. George was a member of the Southside Optimist Club since 1960 and president in 1965. He chaired the ham and beans booth at Johnny Appleseed Festival for 30 years. George was a member at St. Joseph United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, Ohio State football, IU basketball, and the Cincinnati Reds. Survivors include his wife; Ruth, Sons; Gary (Irene), Gregg (Lynda), Glenn, Robert, Guy (Denise); and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents; Hubert and Helen Abels, sister; Gloria Abels, and brother; Gene Abels. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 10:00am with calling one-hour prior from 9:00am-10:00am at D.O. McComb and Sons Maplewood Park, 4017 Maplecrest Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46815.
