Doris Sprunger, 96, of Berne and formerly of Fort Wayne, passed away at Swiss Village Retirement Community in Berne, on Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018. Born on March 5, 1922 in Monroe Township near Berne, Doris was a daughter of Jonas and Zilla (Gilliom) Sprunger.
Doris attended her neighborhood No. 8 Sprunger Country School for eight years, before graduating from Monroe, Indiana High School in 1940. Always outstanding in math, Doris graduated from International Business College in Fort Wayne in 1944.
Doris had a stellar work record, beginning at Decatur Super Service. In Fort Wayne, Doris worked twenty-seven years at Meyers & McCarthy, and then at Dulin, Ward & DeWald, serving as a bookkeeper/accountant for each firm. After completing a course with H & R Block, Doris used the earned credentials to become a tax preparer, for over twenty years. Doris continued working part time into her eighties after retirement.
In the fall of 2010, Doris moved from Fort Wayne to a lovely apartment in Swiss Village Retirement Center in her home town of Berne, where she enjoyed the loving Swiss Village staff, being near relatives, renewing acquaintances, making new friends, reading and watching tv sports.

Upon her profession of faith in Jesus Christ, Doris was baptized on May 31, 1936. Her favorite Bible verse was John 3:16.
Doris is survived by her sister Berneta (Sprunger) Yager and sister-in-law Alice (Merlin) (Neuenschwander) Sprunger, both of Berne. Many adoring, grateful nieces and nephews, scattered throughout the States, also survive. Doris will be remembered by friends and relatives for her sweet spirit, quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. Preceding Doris in death were six brothers: Freadus, Lowell, Otis, Loren, Merlin K. and Verne Sprunger and her sister, Margaret Eggers.
A Celebration of Doris' life is scheduled for Saturday, April 21 in Swiss Village Chapel in Berne, with calling at 1:00pm and service at 2:00pm. Doris' cousin,Rev. Jerry Flueckiger will officiate. Preferred memorial is to the Samaritan Fund at Swiss Village, 1350 W. Main Street; Berne, IN 46711. Final arrangements by D.O. McComb and Sons of Fort Wayne.
