Steven Paul Riethmiller, 71, of Fort Wayne, passed away at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home on Wednesday, August 14, 2019. Born on April 21, 1948 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late William Paul and Jean (Oldach) Riethmiller. Steve earned an Undergraduate degree from Manchester College and a Master's degree from the University of Saint Francis. He then began his teaching career at Woodside Middle School where he taught science, coached football and wrestling. He also scouted during the Homestead High School football season. Steve later became the Director of Technology for Southwest Allen County School retiring from that position in 2005. Later returning to the classroom to teach biology and environmental science at Keystone and Horizon Christian Academy. As an educator Steve was named the Indiana Science Teacher of the Year. Served on the Board of Directors of McMillen Health Center and Indiana Computer Educators. He also received a Lilly Endowment Fellowship to study the costal ecosystems of Northern Ireland. Steve volunteered as Bill the Lion, at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo and in the pediatric unit of Lutheran Children's Hospital. He was an active member of Plymouth Congregational Church, where he served on several committees and participated in many church- sponsored community outreach programs. Steve touched many lives, left many footprints, and will be remembered for his devotion to his family, love of life, spirit of adventure, sense of humor and his ongoing joy of learning and teaching. The family wishes to thank the many friends and families who have shared our journey, the staff and residents of Coventry Meadows who turned a long-term care facility into a home and the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home staff who provided comfort and peace to Steve and his family. He survived by his wife of 48 years, Donna (Bridges) Riethmiller; son, Daniel W. (Brittany) Riethmiller; daughter, Julie McGinley; grandchildren, Cadence, Myles, Maddox, Brooks, and Emery Riethmiller; brothers, David (Kim) Riethmiller, Tom (Teresa) Riethmiller; and several loving nieces and nephews, and in-laws. A Memorial service will be at 11am on Saturday, August 24 at the Plymouth Congregational Church Berry Street Fort Wayne, Indiana 46802. Visitation will be from 5-8pm on August 23, 2019 at the church. To honor and celebrate Steve's indelible spirit, please wear red, orange, or other brightly- colored clothing to his service on Saturday. Steve was a wonderfully funny and tolerant neighbor when I was growing up. So much so, he promised to marry me (when I was four) despite our fourteen year age difference. I had the privilege of working with him professionally on occasion when we shared students who had mental health challenges. He never ceased to be supportive and creative as we worked together to help students achieve success after they had been hospitalized. My love and prayers are with all of the Reithmillers. Steve was such a bright light in so many ways. God's peace,
Janet

I had the privilege to work with Steve in Southwest Allen Co Schools. He and his wife were also neighbors of ours in Oak Borough. Always a wave or a smile when I saw him out and about. Prayers for the family.

Many of my best childhood memories from 1952-1964 were with my friend Steve Riethmiller. And from what I have read here, he became a great teacher, husband, father, and friend to many others. I feel very fortunate to have known him for that brief period.

God Bless you Stewie and Donna. Some of my most memorable moments during high school were that of Stewie and I hanging out together. And he was a very lucky pal who hooked up with his most wonderful wife.

A GOOD TEACHER HAS A PASSION FOR THE SUBJECT MATTER AND FOR THE STUDENTS THEY TEACH. STEVE HAD BOTH IN EXCESS. STEVE WAS ENTHUSIASTIC FOR WHATEVER HE WAS DOING. WHEN YOU VISITED STEVE HIS EYES WOULD LIGHT UP AND HE TRIED SO HARD TO COMMUNICATE HIS THOUGHTS TO YOU.

ON OCCASION WE WOULD SNEAK IN SOME FUN TIME AT WOODSIDE AND GUESS WHO LED THE PARADE. YES, IT WOULD BE STEVE. IT WAS THIS SPIRIT HE HELPED SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE STAFF MAKING WOODSIDE A POSITIVE PLACE TO TEACH,

STEVE TEAMED WITH CHUCK FAIN TO BRING SCIENCE ALIVE FOR OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. STUDENTS STILL RECALL THEIR TIME IN THE SCIENCE LAB WITH ALL THE ANIMALS, THANKS STEVE FOR BEING THAT SPECIAL TEACHER.

Our 3 children were very fortunate to have Steve as a teacher. God Bless your family and carry you through this difficult time.

Steve was "one of a kind"...there wasn't a day that I taught with him that he didn't make me smile. He was such a wonderful teacher and touched so many lives with his smile. Glad we crossed paths Steve.

To Donna and family, Don and I are so sorry for your loss. Steve was one of my favorite bosses. He had a heart of gold and was respected by his team. I will alway remember the last time he stopped in at our office. It was a week before his accident and he was full of mischief. He will always have a spot in my heart.

I am so saddened by the news of Steves passing. What a joy and a blessing to have known him for even a short time. His smile was infectious. His humor and wit were not lacking. Love and prayers for his whole family. Especially his wife, Donna, who is an example to follow, in love and devotion.
