Tribute & Message From The Family

MILDRED C. KOONS, 93, Fort Wayne resident passed away Saturday, June 22 at 7:01 PM at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She now resides in Heaven with Jesus and is currently enjoying being reunited with loved ones who passed before. She was born on September 30, 1925 in Mt. Summit, Indiana, a daughter of the late Herman and Crystal Harry.
She graduated from Mt. Summit High School and attended Earlham College. She had worked as a Rental Manager in Cambridge Square in Marion, IN before retiring. She loved travelling, knitting, sewing and making Christmas stockings for her family. She was a marvel of a wordsmith which made completing crossword puzzles a cinch. She loved watching the Andy Griffith Show, and shopping for fine-crafted turquoise jewelry. She was active in church and played piano at Women's Bible Study Fellowship Meetings. Mildred loved her family and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She always spoke so very fondly of her children and grand-children and would never miss the opportunity to encourage them. Her wit was legendary as was her way with words. Her smile was ever-present as was her positive spin on life. She will be lovingly revered and remembered as a woman of strength and courage. She fought valiantly as she dealt with Alzheimer's Disease for the better part of a decade.
She is survived by children Larry Koons (Petoskey, MI), Jay Koons (Indianapolis, IN), Kelly Koons (wife Jody Koons) in Springdale, AR, Pat Marcuccilli (husband Jim Marcuccilli) Fort Wayne, IN, and Shannon Persinger (husband Eric Persinger) Fort Wayne, IN, 12 grand-children, 3 great grand-children, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband George H. Koons, Jr. and six siblings: Carroll Copeland, Gene Copeland, Fred Copeland, Forest Copeland, Janice Nixon, and her dear sister and best-friend, Mary Lou Clapp.
Visitation will be at 12:00 PM Wednesday, June 26 at The Chapel with funeral service immediately following at 1:00 PM at The Chapel with Pastor Rick Hawks officiating. The Chapel address is 2505 W. Hamilton Rd, Fort Wayne, IN. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory in Marion, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Online condolences may be made at

Life Stories

I wasn’t notified that my aunt Mildred had passed away. Not surprising. I remember when I was stationed at Grissom Air Force Base I would go to my aunts house every Monday for dinner. It was so nice to be with family. She and my mother had such a wonderful relationship. I will miss her.
