Tribute & Message From The Family
Vernon A "Papa" Hurley, 81, passed away on June 18, 2019 surrounded by family. He was born on March 21, 1938 in Fort Wayne, IN, the son of the late Ross and Lucille Hurley. Vern served the greater Indiana community in the construction industry for over 60 years. He found joy spending time with family, enjoying morning donuts with the gang, and strolling the beach in Fort Myers, Florida. He dealt fairly with a sharp pencil and a hand shake, and will be remembered as a tough hard working man. Surviving are his two children, Kimberly (Steve) Westrick and Christopher (Pam) Hurley. Six grandchildren, Daniel, Benjamin, Shelby, Sydney, Austin, and Kyle. And four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; and his siblings. A Memorial Service will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at D.O. McComb and Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46804. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7pm.
Condolence & Memory Journal
This is so very sad. He was our neighbor for the 22 years we've been living in Fort Wayne. He and my husband became friends. He was a wonderful man. We are so sorry we missed the service. We were not aware until after the fact. Our first day that we moved here, I was on my back step letting our dog out and he strolled across the yard and stuck out his hand and "said My name is Verne Hurley, I'm your neighbor and welcome to the neighborhood." He would pop over now and again for a visit and/or to drop off veggies. He will be greatly missed by our family.

This is not real. Vern, our neighbor, my friend, is the man who is supposed to be around and still working hard and making us laugh until he's 120. I am having such a hard time swallowing this news. I hid in my closet and cried hard tears when this truth sunk in. My family and I will love and remember Vern for the rest of our lives. I am sick that we cannot be back for his memory tonight. Our prayers are with all of his family and all of those who's hearts are more full b/c of knowing Vern. Rest well ole neighbor.

Chris ~
My condolences to you and your family. I saw Vern and got to talk to him a little bit at the end of Dec. 2019. Although it has been years since we crossed each other but it was like the old days. I'm glad he recognized me and gave me a hug. I have no idea that he would be leaving so soon. He sure will be missed.

Our deepest sympathy go out to all of you. Brian and I met Vern 6 years ago at Banditos and became close friends. Many a Friday and Saturday night we spent laughing around the bar enjoying Margaritas together. He would do anything for anyone we saw first hand. We are blessed for the few years we shared with him and will forever cherish all the fun memories we had with him. He was so very proud of his family. May God comfort all of you.

My wife and I knew Vern through a mutual friend and we were quickly impressed with his wisdom, generosity and friendliness. He was great to hang out with as he was a breath of fresh air just because of how he was as a person. Anybody that knew him is better off for it. Prayers to his family and loved ones, he will be missed.

We were fortunate to have Big foot as a friend enjoyed his visits here in March on his way to Florida. Could not quite figure out the rules to LCR this year so dominos became the game of choice We will miss him
