Tribute & Message From The Family

Elmer L. Shawgo, 93, died Jan. 2 at Bethlehem Woods Nursing & Rehabilitation in Fort Wayne after a short illness.

Born July 22, 1924, in Mason County, Illinois, Elmer was a World War II Navy veteran stationed aboard the USS LSM-312 amphibious assault ship, achieving the rank of machinist mate 1st class. The ship was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the Okinawa assault, among others.

After the war Elmer worked in car sales in California and in Fort Wayne until his retirement in 1995. In his spare time Elmer enjoyed fishing, tinkering in the yard and socializing. The family loved his Christmas fudge and peanut brittle. He was a member of the Alliance Community Church in Fort Wayne.

Surviving are son Ron (Frederika) Shawgo of Fort Wayne; grandsons Christopher and Graham Wood; granddaughters Amanda K. Widmeyer and Kaitlin E. Shawgo; four great-grandchildren and sister Erma Mitchell.

Elmer was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Phyllis M. Shawgo, daughter Sharon Wood-Abelson, sister, Eula Carlton, and by his parents, Arthur and Alma Shawgo.

Thanks to the Fort Wayne VA hospital's excellent medical staff, the caring people at Bethlehem Woods and to Heart to Heart Hospice for easing the way. The family owes them a debt of gratitude.

Memorial service is 4 pm, Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Alliance Community Church, 5610 Lahmeyer Road, Fort Wayne, with a gathering of family and friends

from 2 pm until the service. Memorials may be made to Northeast Indiana Cancer Research or Heart to Heart Hospice. D.O. McComb and Sons Lakeside Park

Uncle Elmer was such a joy to know. He had such a good sense of humor and was dearly loved by everyone who knew him. He will be sorely missed.
