Tribute & Message From The Family

Barbara A. Becker returned to her Heavenly Father November 12, 2017. She was born on October 26, 1934, in the living room of the home her grandfather built in Aboite Township. She was the daughter of Doris and Margaret (McMaken) VanHoozen, who preceded her in death. She grew up on a forty-acre family farm with her younger sister Joyce (Ken) Offord and brother Richard (Debbie) VanHoozen, who both survive her. She graduated from Jefferson Center High School, where she was senior class president. She then worked at Western Union where she met Joseph C. Becker. They were wed on October 9, 1954, and were married 53 years before Joe's death in 2007. Together they raised six children, Michael (Ellen) Becker of Fort Wayne, Kevin (Karen) Becker of Oxford, IN, Mark (Christi) Becker of Chelsea, MI, Doris (Mark) Biddle and Robert (Heather) Becker, both of Noblesville, IN, and Patricia (Joe) Bond of FOrt Wayne, all of whom survive her. As the children got older, Barb worked at GTE, where she spent many years until her retirement. She was a charter member of Saint Henry's Parish and was a member of St. Charles Parish in her later years. She had a zeal for life, lived her faith, and loved her family and friends. She was always thankful for her blessings. She was a gift to all who knew her and will be greatly missed. In addition to her children and siblings, Barbara is survived by 22 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; two grandchildren preceded her in death. Mass of Christian Burial is Friday, November 17, 2017 10:30 am at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 4916 Trier Road, with calling an hour prior to Mass. Calling will also be held from 2-4pm and 6-8 pm on Thursday, November 16, 2017 in D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Homes - Maplewood Park, 4017 Maplecrest Road with a Rosary Service at 7:30 pm. She will be laid to rest in Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Catholic Charities, American Diabetes Association, Masses, or donor's choice. To sign the online guest book, go to

Condolence & Memory Journal

I last saw cousin Barbara the last time I was in Indiana - 17 years ago. But she has long been one of my favorite people since I met her at the old family reunions we used to have every October. When my wife and I were newly married and were visiting, Barbara kind of took us under her wing and showed us around town and was just nice to us. We've always appreciated her for that. She was always just a warm and kind person.

We could always count on being greeted by a great hug when we went to see Grandma. She kept cookies in the house for us, she took us to the zoo, she loved hearing stories about our lives and always kept track of what all her grandkids were doing. She sent cards on our birthdays. She was always cheerful and always laughed when you were trying to be funny. She understood and loved us each for who we are, individually. She was incredibly understanding and open-minded. She had a love for culture and travel and trying new things. She told great, honest stories about her life. She lived fully - looked for opportunities and never made excuses. Her life was an example of how Christ asks us to live. How blessed we are for Grandma Becker!

May God Bless, Barbara A. Becker, who is in heaven with our Lord and Savior. May God also bless all of her family members and help them during their time of grief.

I am sorry that I did not know this lady, but, I do know her fine son Robert Becker. And the fruit does not fall far from the tree, so knowing Bob and what a great guy he is assures me that his Mother was a very fine lady.

God Bless the Becker Family,
Jeff Paulson
